Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Fear a Root Canal

Huge advancements in the science of dentistry in recent years mean there’s no reason for you to fear a root canal. A root canal is a way to save your natural tooth, prevent an infection from getting worse, and preserve your oral health.

When you have a root canal, your dentist clears away any infected pulp. First, they create a small opening in your tooth, so that they can get to the pulp. They clear away all the infected material, thoroughly clean the inside of your tooth to be sure all of the bacteria is gone, then fill and seal your tooth.

At Perfect Smiles of Pleasant Hill, Dr. Nupur Gupta and her staff know how common it is to be afraid of having a root canal, but we want to assure you there’s nothing to be worried about. We do everything in our power to make sure that you’re comfortable and calm during any procedure, including a root canal.

Don’t expect pain

One of the most common misconceptions about a root canal is that it’s a painful procedure. However, Dr. Gupta and our team make sure that your mouth is numb throughout the procedure. You may feel occasional pressure as we take care of your tooth, but it shouldn’t hurt at all.

If, for some reason, you do feel pain, make sure to let us know. We can administer additional anesthetic, if necessary.

No downtime required

We do numb your mouth, so eating and drinking will be strange for a few hours, but otherwise you can go right back to your normal daily activities. You shouldn’t need time off work, cancel plans, or take time to rest because of the root canal.

A root canal is safe

In 95% of root canals, the tooth is repaired, and there are no complications. In fact, the repair usually lasts a lifetime. Dr. Gupta’s expertise and experience mean that you don’t need to worry — you’re receiving skilled care from a professional.

Your looks remain the same

A filling or a crown is necessary after a root canal to seal and protect your tooth. We can color match either so that it blends with your other teeth. Nothing about your smile or appearance is altered after a root canal.

If you need a root canal, don’t delay and let the infection get worse. Schedule your appointment today, and if you would like to discuss the procedure or your fears, we’re happy to answer your questions.
