Dentures Q & A

Why replace missing teeth?

If you have one or more missing teeth, it’s important to understand why replacing them is critical to your dental and overall health. Simply adjusting to the loss of your natural teeth is not the best approach and can cause long-term oral health problems.

To begin, missing teeth can make you feel less confident about your smile. Since your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, it makes sense to do everything you can to feel good about sharing your grin with those around you.

But missing teeth are also a health concern. When you lose one or more teeth, your remaining teeth begin to shift out of position. Without the same support, they can also become loose, leading to even more tooth loss. Your bite can change, placing undue pressure on your remaining teeth.

Missing teeth can also limit your diet options. If you find yourself routinely avoiding certain foods because they are more difficult to chew, it’s time to begin exploring tooth replacement options. Nutrition is critical to your health and wellness, and a varied diet is important.

What are dentures?

Dentures are a span of artificial teeth that replace your natural teeth. Partial dentures fit around your remaining healthy teeth, while full dentures replace the entire upper or lower arch of teeth.

Many people choose dentures after losing multiple teeth to advanced decay. Gum disease can also cause tooth loss and is difficult to treat once it reaches advanced stages. In some cases, certain medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation can cause you to lose teeth.

The artificial teeth are anchored to a flesh-colored acrylic, which fits over the surface of your gums. Partial dentures are secured to a metal wire and acrylic base plate that fits over your gums. Advancements in dental technology have led to dentures that are far more comfortable than those of decades past.

What is the process for getting dentures?

The first step is a comprehensive dental exam to determine if you have any areas of decay or gum disease that need to be addressed prior to getting fitted for your new dentures. If you need to have teeth extracted, that must also take place before getting your new set of dentures.

Next, Dr. Gupta gathers digital imaging or impressions of the shape of your gums. This information is used to craft your custom dentures. Once they are complete they’ll be checked for fit.

It takes some time to get used to wearing a new set of dentures. But before you know it, they will feel comfortable, and you’ll wonder why you waited so long. When you’re ready to get started, call Perfect Smiles Dental of Pleasant Hill, or try the easy online booking tool.
